How do I set up a development cycle?

The Great Teaching Toolkit development cycle is a four-stage, evidence-informed process that supports personalised professional development by helping teachers set goals, build understanding, develop skills, and reflect on changes in their practice. It is a personal space for teachers to record and reflect on their own professional development, and the content can only be viewed by the teacher, unless they choose to share it.

  1. Head to the ‘Development cycles’ section of the platform, and select ‘Create new development cycle’ on the right-hand side of your screen.

  2. Give your development cycle a title. You can choose any name here, but it’s best to choose a title makes it easily identifiable, in case you need to come back to it at a later date, e.g., Spring Term 26 – Questioning; English Development 2026-27.

  3. Then, select a development focus from one of the elements or dimensions in the dropdown list. If you are unsure which development focus to choose, it’s worth taking some time to explore the Model for Great Teaching and reflecting on your practice. If you choose a dimension, you’ll have the opportunity to focus in on a specific element later on, once you’ve collected some feedback on your practice. Select ‘Save’ and this will take you to the first page of your development cycle: Set a goal.
