How do I use the video feedback tool?

The video feedback tool in the Great Teaching Toolkit allows teachers to upload short clips of their classroom practice and use them as a basis for reflection and development. By watching your teaching back, you can notice details that are often easy to miss in the moment and focus on specific elements of great teaching. You can use the tool independently for self-reflection or share videos with colleagues to invite targeted, developmental feedback. This makes it a flexible and powerful way to deepen professional learning, refine techniques, and support ongoing improvement.

  1. Once you have uploaded a video to the platform, it will appear in your ‘Video feedback’ page.
  2. If a colleague has shared a video with you, you’ll be notified by email and you’ll also find this video in the ‘Video Feedback’ page.
  3. To begin a feedback session, select a saved or shared video in your ‘Video Feedback’ page. Here you will be able to watch and review the video as many times as you need to. A rubric, linked to the element of great teaching the video focuses on, will appear to the right-hand side of the video. This will guide you to look for aspects of effective practice related to this element.

  4. As you watch, you’ll be able to tag the video with the different aspects of effective practice by clicking on the statements in the rubric. For each moment you highlight with a click, a star will appear on the timeline to make it easier for you, or your colleague, to return to this moment later. For each tag you create, you’ll have the option to label it as an example of ‘great teaching’ or an ‘area of growth’. Importantly, you’ll be able to add notes to provide context, explain why you selected that moment, and capture reflections or next steps for future classroom practice.
  5. When you have finished providing feedback or adding self-reflection notes, you can choose to save the session. If you have provided feedback to a colleague, the video will then disappear from your ‘Video feedback’ page and your colleague will receive a notification that feedback has been provided. Videos you have uploaded for self-reflection will remain on the page for you to return to.
