What can I expect from the courses in the GTT?

All of the courses in the Great Teaching Toolkit combine research, practical classroom strategies and classroom scenarios to help you connect evidence and ideas with your own practice.

You can expect a mixture of:

  • Videos, reading, models and interactive activities
  • Recommended additional reading to help you explore topics in more depth
  • Reflection questions to help you connect learning to your own practice
  • Short, low-stakes practical challenges to help you try out ideas along the way

The courses vary in length and are designed for different roles and professional learning needs.

Lead Courses
The Assessment Lead Programme, Science of Learning Programme and Behaviour and Culture Programme are designed for middle and senior leaders, and colleagues with responsibility for leading these areas across a school or setting.

Each course takes around 30 hours to complete, which could be spread across an academic year at around one hour per week. Collaboration is a key feature of these courses, with activities and opportunities designed to support discussion and learning with colleagues.

Teacher Courses
The eight teacher courses are designed primarily for classroom teachers and some support staff. They focus on the dimensions and elements of the Model for Great Teaching and provide opportunities to explore evidence and apply it to classroom practice.

Each course takes around 6 hours to complete. Meeting templates are available in Great Teaching Teams to support collaborative discussions, peer learning and professional support alongside the course.

The Foundation Course
The Foundation Course is designed for anyone working in a school or college. It provides an introduction to the Great Teaching Toolkit, the Model for Great Teaching and some of the core concepts from the science of learning.

It takes around 4–5 hours to complete and is a useful starting point for exploring the Toolkit and building a shared understanding of great teaching.

Inclusive Education Course
The Inclusive Education Course is designed for learning support assistants, teachers and leaders. It provides insights into inclusive teaching and explores how different roles can work together to create a more inclusive educational experience for all learners.

The course takes around 3–4 hours to complete.
