What should I consider when selecting a classroom video to upload?

Recording your teaching can feel daunting at first, especially if this is something new for you or your students. However, research shows that recorded classroom clips can be a powerful tool for reflection, discussion, and professional feedback. Once teachers begin using video feedback regularly, they often quickly see the value it brings to professional learning and development.

  • Keep your video short and focused: a 2–5 minute clip focused on one specific area, such as a new questioning technique, classroom routines, or explanations, will usually lead to the most useful feedback.
  • Record authentic classroom practice: your lesson does not need to be perfect. Real classroom interactions often provide the best opportunities for meaningful feedback and reflection.
  • Set up the camera carefully: position the camera so it captures both the teaching and important classroom interactions, and make sure audio and lighting are clear.
  • Test and review your recording before uploading: a short test recording can help check sound and camera angle, and you may wish to record several clips before choosing the one that best represents your feedback focus.
  • Follow school filming and privacy guidance: ensure your recording complies with your school or organisation’s policies around filming in classrooms and student privacy.

Video feedback is versatile and can be used by individuals and teams in a variety of ways. Find out more here.
