Can teachers delete recordings?
Yes, they have the option to delete their lesson recordings. What happens next depends on when they delete the recording.
Deleting a recording before it is uploaded
Teachers can delete a recording immediately after they stop recording, before it is uploaded.
They might want to do this if:
- They accidentally started recording
- Sensitive information was captured
- Pupils came into view unexpectedly
If teachers delete a recording at this stage:
- It is not shared with the ECT’s mentor
- It is not transcribed
- It is not used for research
Once deleted, the recording cannot be recovered.
Deleting a recording after it is uploaded
Teachers can also delete a recording after it has been uploaded.
If they do this:
- The video is deleted from their account (and if applicable, their mentor’s account)
- Transcripts will still be retained for research unless the teacher opted out of research use for that recording.
Automatic deletion after 30 days
All video recordings are automatically deleted after 30 days. This short retention period:
- Minimises storage of teacher and pupils’ personal data
- Still allows teachers enough time to watch the video for ECT development
After 30 days:
- The video is permanently deleted
- Transcripts may be retained for research only where the teacher did not opt out
