# How is pupil data protected?

Pupil data is handled carefully and with safeguards in place. This means:

- teachers are asked to position the device to avoid capturing pupils’ faces
- schools are asked to share age-appropriate [info sheets](https://support.evidencebased.education/prism/share-information-pupils-lesson-recording-mentor?hsLang=en) with pupils before any recording takes place
- teachers are asked to let pupils know when they are recording<https://support.evidencebased.education/prism/share-information-pupils-lesson-recording-mentor?hsLang=en>
- recordings are only used for research if there are no pupil opt-outs in that class
- any transcripts used for research have names and other identifying details removed
- recordings are automatically deleted after 30 days
- teachers can delete a recording immediately after they stop recording, before it is uploaded, if something sensitive is captured (for example, confidential information or pupils coming into view).
