How often should I use the Lesson Recording tool?

Only as much as it is helpful for your ECT’s development.

The tool is not intended to increase workload. It is designed to make drop-ins, reflection and feedback more flexible and more effective.

As a guide, the tool can be used to alternate with in-person drop-ins, in line with the normal mentoring cycle. For example:

  • ECT Year 1: fortnightly
  • ECT Year 2: monthly

Your ECT may also choose to record more often for their own self-reflection.

Recording your own lessons can support the ‘See it’ stage of deliberate practice by giving your ECT a clear model of effective practice. In mentor meetings, you can then use the clip to ‘Name it’ by identifying the specific features or actions that make the practice effective, before discussing how your ECT might use it in their own classroom.

How often you choose to record your own lessons to model effective practice is up to you and will depend on your ECT’s needs. For example, you might record a short lesson segment each week to model effective practice linked to your ECT’s current action step. Alternatively, you might record multiple short segments across a week to show how the same practice can be adapted across different lessons, classes or contexts.
