Is contributing to research compulsory?
There are different levels of agreement and choice.
School
When a school enables the Lesson Recording tool, it is agreeing to take part in the research project. This is completed through the guided PRISM permissions flow.
This means a school cannot enable the tool and opt out of the project altogether.
Teachers
Teachers can still choose whether a specific recording is used for research.
If a teacher does not want a recording to contribute to research, they can select the research opt-out option when starting that recording.
The lesson can still be recorded and used as normal for ECT development and mentoring.
Parents and pupils
Parents can opt their child’s class out of research use.
If a class has a pupil opt-out, lessons from that class can still be recorded and used for ECT development and mentoring.
The teacher should select the research opt-out option when starting recordings for that class.
What is used for research?
Research use only involves the written transcript, not the video recording.
If a recording is opted out of research use, the transcript will not be used for research.
What do induction tutors need to do?
Induction tutors should make sure that:
- the Parent Notification has been shared
- any pupil opt-outs are recorded clearly
- relevant ECTs and mentors know which classes have pupil opt-outs
This ensures teachers know when to select the research opt-out option before recording a lesson.
